To work alongside the CEO to deliver finance support to the firm. In addition to the 'standard' responsibilities, this role combines compliance, risk management and control aspects alongside decision support and value creation as the firm evolves and adapts to the changing commercial environment on the legal sector.

My client is a high-quality, commercial law firm with expertise in specific business sectors. They provide tailored and integrated legal services across a wide range of practice areas to both UK and international clients. Ranked highly in the latest edition of The Lawyer 'UK-200' law firms, they combine the personal and responsive service of a boutique, with 'big firm' expertise


Key responsibilities - decision support:

  • Responsible for the preparation of the group's statutory accounts using FRS102. There are currently 4 entities to be consolidated;

  • Responsible for the preparation of the firm's internal accounts;

  • Oversee the preparation of the monthly reporting 'pack' and interpret the trends;

  • Preparation and interpretation of the annual budget;

  • Develop and oversee the partner performance reporting framework;

  • Develop effective management information and decision support analyses;

  • Ad hoc analyses for surveys, submissions and insurance renewals.

Key responsibilities - compliance and risk management:

  • Responsible for the finance's compliance with SRA rules;

  • Dealing with SRA and statutory accounts audits;

  • VAT returns;

  • Overseeing and authorising day-to-day banking activities;

  • Responsible for month-end procedures and reconciliations;

  • Maintain and develop efficient financial processes, while ensuring correct accounting controls.

Key responsibilities - adding value:

  • Treasury management and management of banking relationships;

  • Working capital management;

  • Maintaining and developing efficient financial transaction processes, for example: billing, credit control, expense claims, disbursement management, supplier payments, cash transfers;

  • Liaising with HR - reward, IT - finance systems, business development & marketing - CRM, training - new joiners;

  • Supporting efforts to maximise (profitable) revenue, through analysis and engagement with the fee earners;

  • Constant focus on cost management;

  • Promoting financial literacy and culture change within the firm;

Other responsibilities:

  • Induction to Accounts for new joiners;

  • Supporting staff with accounts -related questions;

  • Development of finance team;

  • Implementation and exploitation of a new Practice Management System (Aderant;

  • Financial analysis and support for various projects;

  • Ad hoc projects - there will be a number of these.


Excellent customer service skills

Strong stakeholder management: identification of key individuals and areas to keep on side

Excellent oral and written communication

Confident and able to engage with the firm

Analytical approach, meticulous attention to detail, flexibility and a "can do" attitude

Experience in preparing LLP, Limited Company and Consolidated accounts

ACA/ACCA Qualified with at least 5 years of post qualified experience

Experience of managing a team

Law firm experience

Good IT skills, especially Excel

Knowledge of SRA rules

Positive, resilient, well organised and flexible
