About the AER

The Australian Energy Regulator is an independent Commonwealth statutory authority that regulates energy markets and networks. We are an independent decision making body with dedicated staff, that shares resources and facilities with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). The AER operates under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (The Act) and our functions are set out in the national energy market legislation and rules relating to energy markets in all Australian states and territories, except Western Australia.

What we are looking for?

Australia's national energy regulator is seeking a senior financial economics advisor with extensive experience in the field of financial economics or corporate finance to expand its existing technical expertise. The successful applicant will provide advice to staff and the AER Board on financial economic matters relevant to the AER's network regulation responsibilities. The ideal candidate will have tertiary qualifications in financial economics, corporate finance or a related discipline, preferably at a post-graduate level, and extensive experience working on the rate of return (cost of capital) and related financial issues. Experience working in the finance or investment banking sector is desirable as is experience in or knowledge of the Australian finance sector.


§  Provide advice to AER staff and the AER Board on the assessment of issues relevant to setting the rate of return (cost of capital), including assistance in drafting the rate of return guideline and regulatory determinations.

§  Provide advice to AER staff and the AER Board on other issues related to corporate finance.

§  Provide guidance on the need for and type of technical (expert) input required for the AER's network regulation responsibilities.

§  Co-ordinate the work of other external experts and assist AER staff in their interactions with them.

§  Serve as key point of contact for financial economic matters that have been raised between the AER, its consultants, network businesses and other stakeholders.

§  Assist in the preparation of Court and Tribunal documents and the briefing of legal Counsel in relation to financial matters.

§  Represent the AER at relevant conferences, forums and in other engagement activities.

§  Provide structured and regular training of AER staff on financial issues.
