Are you looking for an opportunity to work with ministers and senior figures across Government and beyond to shape and drive HM Treasury's high-profile tax agenda? If so, then we'd love to hear from you We are currently looking for a Branch Leader in our VAT and Excise team. This is a flexible, friendly and fast-paced team at the heart of HMT's tax agenda. We provide ministers with policy advice on VAT, insurance premium tax, alcohol duties, tobacco duties, gambling taxes and the Soft Drinks Industry Levy. Together, these raise over £180bn a year. The team supplies significant numbers of measures to fiscal events (Budgets) and generates a large amount of Chancellor and outside interest. We set strategic direction to reform and improve the indirect tax system. Branch leaders sit as part of our management team and contribute to the wider wellbeing and success of the team, in both policy and corporate terms. Our managers are expected to manage the branch to a high level - this branch currently includes 2 Range Ds (SEO/HEO level). In addition, your key accountabilities will include : Leading on VAT refunds policy Leading VAT rates policy Leadership of the Rates and Refunds Branch, ensuring the branch provides high quality advice to ministers and senior officials. Stakeholder management; acting as the professional face of HM Treasury, listening to and analysing concerns. This is an exciting and interesting role with a significant amount of autonomy and chance to develop leadership, strategy and management skills. Ministers can take significant interest in this area - daily requests for advice are not unusual (and neither is daily media coverage). This role provides the opportunity to use technical knowledge in a policy context - applying technical expertise to advise ministers on both day-to-day issues and on future reforms. It provides a real opportunity to make a difference and shape the future of the VAT system. You will work closely and intensively with our policy partners in HMRC. Our ideal candidate will have some experience or training in VAT, such as previous experience of working on VAT operations or policy or attendance at a formal VAT course (e.g. CIMA or ATT). If you do not hold a formal qualification, you will be supported to pursue one whilst in post.
