Cambridgeshire County Council spends nearly £1bn per year providing services to 650,000 residents. We care for 4000 older people each year, maintain 6,000 km of highways, support schools educating 86,000 children and provide libraries across the County, as well as a 13,000 hectare agricultural estate and investing in commercial assets. Paramount in all of this is sound and strategic decision making, underpinned by reliable and timely financial reporting. We are accountable to taxpayers for the stewardship of public funds - this is a crucial role in ensuring we accurately account for our financial position. We are seeking a finance professional to contribute to a wide range of financial activities including accountancy and Council-wide analysis. This role would suit an Accountant with experience of one or more of the following: - Applying accounting standards (such as IFRS, FRS, or a sector specific SORP) to a variety of situations - Working with auditors to build assurance about financial ledgers, working papers and financial statements - Accounting for assets and using financial systems to extract reports, analyse data and generating accounts for stakeholders - Financial management in a public service or a "for more than profit" organisation You must be able to manage your own performance to meet objectives and provide an excellent customer focused service, potentially in a political environment. The ability to work flexibly and proactively to your own initiative, to pay attention to detail and understand and interpret information is essential, as are good interpersonal, Excel and technical skills. You will be a proactive communicator with finance and non-finance colleagues. You will need to be qualified or part-qualified Accountant with a commitment to continuing professional development, or be similarly qualified by extensive experience. Cambridgeshire County Council is currently based at Shire Hall in Cambridge and is due to re-locate to a brand new headquarters in Alconbury Weald during Winter 2020-21. This role is located alongside a large team of finance professionals at the County Council enabling opportunities for peer support, development and role rotation. The County Council offers substantial flexible working benefits supported by a strong digital infrastructure and a recently upgraded and now embedded financial accounting system. The roleholder will have the facility to work from home for a proportion of each week once established in post, at least 28 days annual leave per annum and membership of the local government pension scheme. For a successful candidate re-locating into Cambridgeshire, we offer a competitive relocation expenses scheme. The County Council welcomes applicants from all backgrounds, and those interested in the role on a part-time as well as full time basis.
