Overview The role is to provide support to senior colleagues in the winning and execution of Pensions Advisory work, primarily 'Employer Covenant Reviews' to LGPS clients as the team looks to expand its offering in this sector.The role will require experience of the framework within which the LGPS operates as well as accounting, financial analysis and general commercial experience. The candidate will be expected to contribute to delivering solutions and advice to clients (both scheme and employer) on the risks which they face in relation to individual employer covenants. It is expected that the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a deep understanding of the LGPS and have an established network of contacts from which opportunities can be generated.Strong report writing skills and verbal communication skills are required. While direct experience of final salary pension schemes is not specifically required, a willingness to learn about key technical issues is essential.Whilst mainly working within a team environment, certain projects may entail working directly for a senior colleague(s) or other defined group. There will be opportunities to continue developing technical skills and knowledge through on the job experience and formal training. There may also be a requirement to provide support to the wider BR team from time. Responsibilities The Pensions Advisory team provides the following defined benefit pensions advisory services to Employers and funds within the LGPS ()non exhaustive list):1. Employer Covenant Reviews - undertaking financial assessment of sponsoring employers and their ability to meet their obligations and support their section of the fund. These are similar to an independent business review and involve both financial and non-financial analysis2. Affordability Reviews - As 1 above but limited to an assessment of income and expenditure.3. Security Reviews - advising Funds and Employers as to the options that may exist for providing additional security to the Fund4. M&A - advising Funds and Employers as to the covenant issues arising from M&A activity involving Tier 3 Employers (e.g. Universities, Housing Associations) and how additional risk can be mitigated.Project involvement:
• Produce, and review Employer Covenant Review. This will include assessment of the employers profitability, cash flows and balance sheet strength to form an opinion on the strength of the employer covenant, the ability of the employer to make contributions to the scheme and the asset cover available
• Attend client meetings and on occasions, to deputise for senior colleagues, including Partners
• Develop and manage certain client relationships
• Ensure that correspondence, reports and other written output are produced consistent with the Firm's quality standards as well as internal procedures and external regulatory requirements
• Prepare submissions to the Project Acceptance Committee and oversee client take-on.
• Monitor project costs, identify variances and instigate corrective measures as required
• Manage billing, work in progress and cash collection to minimise lock-up
• There should be a continuing desire to develop expertise in specific areas of the Pension Advisory team's work and to share knowledge gained with both senior and junior colleagues as appropriate
• Provide support to colleagues on technical issues and be responsible for delivering work of the highest quality
• Perform any other relevant duties and responsibilities as delegated
• Provide feedback on work produced by junior (or senior) members of the team on a timely and constructive basis
• Provide training to other members of the team both on the job and through active intervention when learning opportunities arise Sales and Marketing:
• Be alert to new business and sales opportunities and take the initiative to realise such opportunities when they arise
• Share ideas and initiatives with appropriate colleagues
• Participate in the marketing initiatives of others
• Seek to develop own network of intermediaries and introducers
• Identify and involve appropriately skilled staff in pursuing new business opportunities Communication and representation:
• Develop contact with clients / work providers at all levels to ensure the Firm maintains strong working relationships
• Act as a liaison between a client and other specialist service groups within BDO
• Demonstrate a positive attitude towards the Firm and its client service principles Requirements
• Direct experience of working with LGPS funds
• Relevant professional accounting qualification
• Relevant technical and management experience at a similar level/ in a similar role Ability to develop and maintain an in-depth technical knowledge
• Commitment, enthusiasm and flexibility
