We’re now looking for a recent Graduate to join our Swindon Head Office Commercial Finance team on a permanent basis as a Junior Finance Analyst. Reporting to the E-Commerce Financial Controller this position would suit a recent Finance , Accounting, Business Management, or Economics graduate with a head for figures and analytical capabilities looking for their first role working for a leading retailer.

If you’re looking to start your finance journey with a company equally as ambitious as you are, then WHSmith could be right for you!

What you’ll do:

The Commercial Finance team’s partner with our Trading teams (Buyers, Merchandisers) and provide analytical and financial support to them. You’ll produce weekly routine reports, data analysis and budget tracking for our Funky Pigeon business, Cult Pens and Card Gallery along with ad hoc trial analysis and support the month end reporting.

You will need to be analytical, and comfortable being involved in analysing the category sales, margin, volumes and using the data to influence the trading teams; all through the year and especially during our key trading periods (back to school and Christmas).

Our trading teams also work closely with suppliers on promotions; you will therefore need to partner with them and support Buyer Price Queries, managing aged debt and supporting the teams to prevent bad debt.

What’s in it for you?

You’ll be at of the hub of an incredibly fast-moving business and you’ll be trusted to make decisions. It’s a serious responsibility – which will seriously motivate you. You’ll thrive on the freedom and the chance to use your skills and will be supported with plenty of training and development opportunities including investment in your professional qualifications in the form of study support (CIMA/ACCA/ACA etc.)

What’s more, you can expect some fab rewards, including an achievable annual bonus, 24 days’ holiday, a competitive pension, the perks of your birthday off, an early finish on Fridays, and lots more!
Who we’re looking for

This is an ideal position for a recent graduate in a related degree such as Finance, Accounting, Business Management, or Economics (with a 2:1 minimum), that has a head for figures and commercial outlook on finance. You don’t need previous accounting experience or qualifications but you do need to be commercial, proactive and analytical, ideally with knowledge of pre-payments and have an interest in Retail. You’ll be a confident PC user including the Microsoft Office package and in particular Microsoft Excel (Pivot Tables & VLookups).

We’re a fast paced business, so you need to be able to work under pressure and to tight; sometimes conflicting deadlines ensuring excellent attention to detail at all times. Within the business you’ll have to engage with both financial and non financial stakeholders, therefore a confident, credible and engaging communication style is vital.
