Our client, a growing SME based in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, is quite possibly one of the most delightful clients I have recruited for in years. A genuinely pleasant, funky, lively and energetic workplace of 30 people, successfully managed and fantastically run, this business is essentially an events & gifts company - with a difference. Designing their own products, with full ownership / royalties on design, plus a direct to consumer and direct to wholesale market model, they are well placed to continue growing after a stellar 10 years - and with strong forecasts for the year ahead, plus wholesale clients such as Selfridges and House of Fraser, they are set to continue growing, with current turnover at £20 million. Due to this growth, a brand new role has arisen - for Financial Controller - to provide not only the day-to-day financial / management accounting responsibilities, but commercial strategy working in tandem with a passionate and ambitious owner / MD - and ultimately, grow a finance team over the next 18 months. As a new role in a growing and successful business, core responsibilities will initially involve ensuring full accounting controls are in place, for both day-to-day accounting and month / Year End, and updating company financial policies as well as developing new policies to not only help / exceed company goals but fully support growth strategy moving forward. Collaborating with the Executive Team to maximise corporate funding, tax issues and growth financing whilst actively promoting core values of the business, the successful candidate will form a powerful duo with an equally energetic and ambitious Managing Director. After your first few months, you'll hire a part-qual / newly qualified Accountant and play a pivotal role in determining the commercial direction and growth of the business, including the imminent expansion into US shores. Core Responsibilities ; Produce monthly management accounts and analyse results and trends for senior management on 3 entities in the group Preparation of the annual and monthly budgets Contribute to company financial strategy and decision-making process, working closely with the MD to drive the business forward Managing the company's payments, transfers and expenditures Perform monthly balance sheet reconciliations Maintain fixed asset register Implement accounting guidelines and ensure compliance with statutory regulations Ensure robust financial systems and processes are in place Manage cash flow by tracking transactions and regularly reviewing internal reports Prepare and submit VAT / tax returns Supervise and manage financial department staff including debt Assist with the statutory audit and manage relationship with auditors / accountants Candidate Requirements Qualified Accountant (ACA, CIMA or ACCA) with 2-3 years PQE in industry as Finance Manager or FC Experience of working in a broad-based FM or FC role in small or mid-sized business dealing with both financial and management accounting, and managing a small finance team A persona - and commercial experience - suited to a fun and lively SME in Surrey, with a 'hands-on' approach who will be comfortable dealing with all aspects of the FC role whilst also Ideally some experience of working for a US business in terms of US GAAP, though this isn't mandatory Commercial acumen to provide strategic input along with the MD to grow the business, in particular the US market A strong influencer who will not only enjoy working in a non-corporate and genuinely friendly and fun environment - but relish it
