Job Details

Are you an accounting professional looking to use your skills and experience to give something back to society and those less fortunate around the world? Perhaps swap London for Laos, Melbourne for Malawi or Boston for Belize!?

Accounting for International Development offers every type of accountant, from anywhere in the world, the opportunity to use their skills to support a broad range of non-profit organisations globally. Volunteer Accounting Assignments of between 2 weeks and 6 months form part of our ongoing strategy to build the financial management capacity of charities in over 50 countries.

Background

Based on the stunning coast of Belize, famous for scuba diving sites and the world’s most popular sinkhole, our partner is one of the oldest NGOs in the country and has been providing support to children and adults with visual impairments for over 30 years with rehabilitation, daily living skills and orientation and mobility services.

The organisation provides education support to blind and visually impaired children in mainstream schools by teaching braille and producing braille texts, computer skills and the provision of adaptive aids.  In addition, the organisation delivers the preventing services of free eye examinations, prescriptions and affordable glasses throughout the country in their primary eye clinics.

Over the years, the NGO has built up its capacity as a self-sustainable organisation through modest fees for services, fundraising and volunteer contributions.  In recent years international grants have been less available and have mostly been targeted for additional and replacement equipment.  Whilst they have been transparent and accountable, they have requested professional guidance in improving their procedures and systems as they plan for the future.

The Role

They have asked for support to implement new software for all their departments, creating/updating the Chart of Accounts and implementing the new system to the highest functionality, as well as training the local team to utilise it correctly.

The role will also include providing support in designing a process that will allow them to understand, capture and analyse all their in-kind income, and a system to allow them to cost accurately all their activities and services, in order to better estimate expenses and assign value to contributions.

This broad and wide-ranging assignment is a great opportunity for an accountant thinking about a career move to the international development sector to get an extensive insight in just a few weeks.

We are confident you’ll encounter a variety of new and exciting challenges, share new experiences with inspiring people and learn skills that will give you confidence to face challenges in other areas of your life. You’ll be inspired and get back so much more than you give!

Company

Accounting for International Development (A f I D) offers accountants the opportunity to use their skills to make a genuine difference as volunteers and to gain invaluable hands-on overseas experience in the International Development sector.  Tailored volunteer assignments of 2 to 12 weeks form part of an ongoing strategy to build the financial management capacity and long term sustainability of small community based charities across Africa, Asia and South America. Our partners which include street kid centres, health clinics and rural schools are doing amazing work to tackle extreme poverty and inequality in their communities but are unable to access vital professional services. A f I D is now supporting almost grassroots charities in over 50 countries across Africa, Asia and South America and are keen to talk to more accountants willing to share their invaluable skills and experience. In only ten years we are pleased to announce the placement of our 1000th  volunteer. This will take the total hours of pro-bono financial management coaching by our volunteers to over 200,000. An extraordinary effort, that assisted the development, and in some cases survival, of some fantastic organisations. A f I D is a double award winning social enterprise supported by UnLtd & The Millennium Awards Trust (Funded by the National Lottery).
