Management Accountant The railway plays a critical role in connecting people, businesses and communities to support both regional and national economic growth. In our role as an asset management service organisation, Network Rail owns, operates, maintains and, where funded, enhances the railway infrastructure. The Wales and Borders railway includes key commuter routes in and around Cardiff and the valleys as well as lines serving towns, cities, and rural and coastal communities on the North Wales coast and in Mid and West Wales. In partnership with key partners and train and freight operating companies, we are working to build a railway that delivers quality rail infrastructure to passengers. Brief Management Accountant Description The Finance function is responsible for establishing Network Rail's cash requirements through the planning process, securing the income requirements through the regulatory process. It controls expenditure and provides clear and accurate management information. Providing customer value for money from suppliers through contracts and procurement; the Finance function also mitigates the Company's exposure to financial risk. In addition the function upholds sound financial control and regulation to meet all external statutory and regulatory financial reporting requirements that are expected of a major listed UK company. As part of the role you will provide a dynamic financial and management accounting service to budget holders to support business decisions and maintain financial control. About the role (External) The key accountabilities of the role are summarised as follows: You will play a part in supporting the preparation of business plans and budgets, providing specialist advice. You will produce and present period actuals and forecasts for budget holders, including preparing period accruals, transfers and adjustments. You will prepare and issue reports and support budget holders in understanding the impact of the period results and forecasts against budgets. You will assist in generating the period end business review pack and highlight any significant issues with financial and other business results. You will uphold corporate governance throughout the function and review compliance with financial regulations. You will assist in investment appraisals and business case analysis for capital projects in relation to Network Rail's Renewals and Enhancements portfolio. You will model and analyse the cost of project delivery within a portfolio and identify and monitor opportunities and efficiencies. You will participate in budget holder key meetings to provide sound financial advice and support. You will provide investment and project accounting services as required for areas of responsibility. You will aid the timely collection of business unit debts and payment of business unit creditors, and supply accurate periodic cash forecasts. 'The role will be within the Wales Route Finance team of Network Rail, specifically looking at Capital delivery of our Renewals and Enhancements portfolio. It will involve being a Business Partner to the Route Asset Team along with liaising with many parts of the company including deliverers (Infrastructure Projects and Network Operations) and other support functions (e.g. Contracts & Procurement, Central Accounts Team and HQ)' Essential Membership of the relevant professional body having progressed beyond the first stage of qualification (student or full), or possession of sufficient experience to fulfil the requirements of the role. A high level of proficiency/understanding of Microsoft Excel Ability to communicate with a range of departments within a business Desirable 2 years' experience within finance disciplines Experience of Oracle based systems
